What's interesting to me, having now read through the debate transcripts of the last five years, is that this has been a consistent campaign pledge, since he was elected to the Senate in 2006. So it's not like it's something McConnell pulled out of his hat the night before the Republicans won the Senate, and then the next day started campaigning for it. So what might be the reason for this? It certainly wasn't the votes to confirm those nominees. John Roberts was confirmed unanimously in 2006; Sam Alito in 2008; Sonia Sotomayor in 2009. David Souter in 2007, Clarence Thomas in 2004. These are all considered landmark liberals, and yet the party in power didn't hold up the votes of any of them. Nor was this a Republican pledge to break the filibuster, which they could have done on any Republican nominee in either the last decade (Roberts, Alito, Sotomayor) or this decade (Thomas). So what was it? The political formula didn't change. The only thing that has changed is that Democrats were in power, and had a record to run on, and a base of primary voters to make the issue a top priority. The Democrats voted to confirm the George W. Bush administration's nominees. The Republicans just had a standard demand that they let the president's people do their jobs, and then take them back after they do. The Democrats didn't filibuster the few people who were able to get through, while the Republicans filibustered the people who could have taken the White House. The Republicans would block nominees from the highest court, instead of blocking them from being appointed. The Democrats threatened to keep the nukes as leverage, but held up nominees no better than the Republicans did. It's the same thing the Republicans did when they were in power 595f342e71
